Whyalla, Hummock Hill Heritage Industrial History. In 1939 BHP Company was approached by the Commonwealth Government to build ships for coastal defence in Whyalla. The construction of the shipyard started in 1940 and the keel of the 1st Whyalla ship, Australian designed anti-submarine & mine sweeping vessel, named after the town, HMAS Whyalla was laid in 1940. This lookout was originally a bunker to protect the ship building port from bombing by the Japanese.
Alistair is enjoying the 360 degree view from Hammock Hill lookout developed by BHP as a gift to the city to commemorate the company's centenary year. The lookout utilised the old gun emplacements and bunkers. You have a view over Whyalla, the vast Onesteel operations, foreshore & marina, across the Spencer Gulf to the Southern Flinders Ranges including Port Bonython & Point Lowly Lighthouse and westward over the city to the ore rich Middleback Ranges
